Cats aren’t killed for high school dissection

I agree with animal rights to but the cat dies naturally and the owner says if he/she will like the cat to go to science or not they don’t kill the cats for high school students.

Cat disection

Overall, the whole disecting of cats is gross. I feel that it is wrong against nature, and killing cats for a simple science class to learn about the body of a cat is a crime. I am totally against disection of cats.

Cat Dissections

I completly agree with you innocent cats should not be killed just so some high school students can dissect them. I don't even like cats , but this article makes me feel bad for them. I think they shoud just get rid of cat dissections in schools all together and just have virtual cat dissections online. So no cat dies and students don't have to dissect a cat.

Cats For The Win!

Cats have feelings too!=]

Cat Disections

I disagree with cat disections, because there aren't necessary adn there are ways around it. U.S. pounds in states with the seizure law can try to better advertise cat adoptions, and try to sell the cats, if not to peopel, than to other animal shelters/pounds. Schools should try to find alternatives to cat disections, like fake cats or computer programs, where students can get the same experience without harming any animals. Besides, some kids in those classes don't WANT to disect cats, but sometimes have to in order to pass the class. As for animal experimentation/disection, it shouldn't allowed. Places that experiment on these animals are taking away someone's pet, and some animal's life. Cat disections shouldn't be allowed, and the cruelty should stop.

Cat Disections

Well, I agree with this blog about cat dissections because it is animal cruelty. Many people have cats as pets and would hate to see their cat being dissected. Their are many other animal choices in Biology instead of cats. There is the traditional worm and frog dissection. Not many people would like to see fluffly being cut in half

:(

I feel as if cats should not be disected due to the fact that they are pets that people have in their homes and consider a part of their family. In most classes if you dont disect the cat, you fail the class or fail on that "lab". It is wrong because most who do own cats wouldn't want to disect something they go home too and play with

Misunderstanding

I see where you are all coming from. I am completly in favor of animal rights. Yet, the cats being disected we're not killed so that they could be disected, they simply dies of natural causes and now can help doctors learn more about the illnesses that killed them and how to prevent them and help us learn about anatomy. However, it is kinda gross and therefore if a student feels queesy or uncomfortable doing something like this they should jnot be forced to do so

Cat Disections

I also agree that it is wrong to disect cats. Cats are living creatures too they deserve as much right as everyone else. Cats are harmless animals and do not dersever to be treated like they are treated. I feel bad for the cats who were disected in the past they did not deserve to have that done to them. Cats are living things too and deserve the same rights as us.

Cat dissections

I also agree it's kind of wrong. I don't know many people who have frogs as pets but i know alot of people who have cats, and im sure they would take it personally to be disecting an animal they have walking around their house. I agree that the dissection process is supposed to help us learn, but if we really need to learn we should choose smaller animals that their are more of like worms or frogs. Not cats.

GROSS

Cats should not be disected... It's really gross and stuff....

meow.
Carli,
C'mon, how can we learn anything if we don't disect animals and people for scientific research. The cats are dead and don't feel the pain. Yes they are cute animals and are kept as pets by many, including myself. However, in order for students to learn it is a necassary thing to do. if you don't want to the disect the cats you don't have to.

EW!

Carli,
Cat dissections are gross. I don't really like cats but that doesen't mean they should be killed just so some kid can cut it open and play with it's organs!! It is really nasty. I hate dissecting stuff, like frogs... that was nasty. But frogs are not as gross as cats, cats are peoples pets, nobody cares about frogs!!

Lindsey

Who Cares?

Personally, I really dont care if they disect cats.... I dont have a cat and I dont want one. Disecting cats for school is fine. But there is something messed up with disecting cats for fun. That is the only thing I have a problem with.

!

Cats as a living creature have just as much rights as we do. =]
I believe this is wrong, too. I personally don't like to disect any kind of animal and I feel it is wrong to do it to innocent animals. A pond should be a safe haven for an animal to live, but apparently it's not. I hope animal rights will be enforced.
p.s. Carli, you are UBSESSED with cats. cool it. love you :)
Carli, i agree cat disections are not right. Cats are domestic animals and should not be used for labs. It is not right.
I agree with this as well. The pounds are not acceptable places for animals in most places. Shelters are a step up but in many cases the animals are killed after only a few weeks. The only acceptable reason for these animals to die and dissect is if they die of natural causes, not being murdered in a kill shelter.
Cat disections are sad and upsetting for cat lovers but if there wasn't a good reason to disect them, schools wouldn't do it. I don't believe in killing an animal to disect it but if the cats die naturally then it is a little better. In most schools there is the option to not disect the cats, and one could do that instead. I highly doubt that schools will get rid of cat disections but if you're not comfortable with it, then don't do it.
Carli,
I agree. I think an easy solution to this dissection problem is to wait for these animals to died naturally. When they do die NATURALLY, they should only then be allowed to be used in science classes. Still, since you don't ever want your cat to be dissected, you don't have to donate your cat's body.

Cat Disections/General Animal Abuse

How could you not like this face? Every year millions of animals are dissected in elementary, secondary, and college science classes. Each animal cut open and discarded, not only represents a life lost, but also a part of a trail of animal abuse and environmental havoc. Many of us have been forced to dissect the most common victim; frogs. Other animals include cats, mice, rats, worms, dogs, rabbits, fetal pigs, and fish. Their innocent lives are taken and disrupted all for our personal use/knowledge. How is that fair? Many animals are taken from their families, or from pounds, and killed solely for dissection.

Some animals come from breeding facilities who cater to institutions and businesses who use these animals for experiments, and other animals are caught in the wild. Animals that are bred just so they can be cut up by young children who probably don't even think about where they came from. Some of the animals are also stolen or abandoned companion animals. So what? You're probably thinking. Even though they were abandoned house pets; does that really mean it's right to just take them and ship them off to a factory to be killed and sold to schools? I honestly don't think it does. So put them in pounds, maybe you're thinking. I used to think that the pound was a nice place for the animals to go where they would be treated kindly and loved..and then i learned this.
I learned that even some pounds and animal shelters sell animals to biological supply companies, which in turn sell them to schools.
U.S pounds and animal shelters were established for the purpose of taking in homeless animals in order to improve animal welfare and protect public health. Many of the animals are taken to the shelters by guardians who can no longer keep them; which is fine. Thats better than simply throwing them out on the street. Others are strays who are taken in by concerned individuals, police officers, or animal control officers. While shelters taken in my animals, they mainly take care of cats and dogs, almost all of which are former companions, or are offspring of their parents. This brings me to my next point; The pound seizure law.

The pound seizure law means that if shelters are located in a state or country that enforces this law, they must turn over animals who are not claimed or taken by an owner within a certain number of days which is typically five. They must turn them over to laboratories who then use them in experiments. As imagined, these experiments must vary from testing human products on animals, to dissections.
Animal Protection Organizations object strongly to pound seizure for a very good reason. Animals who were once loved companions suffer the double blow of losing their human friends, and being confined to a laboratory cage. The families deal with having to know that a lost pet or animal or an animal they may have given up may have been killed in a painful experiment. In communities that require this law, many people who are unable to take care of their animals, are forced to abandon them on the streets or in an open field; which leads to an increase in homeless strays.

By providing an inexpensive and easy source of animals; pound seizure allows experimenters to continue using animals rather than switching to a superior humane alternative that may require an upfront financial investment. For decades, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center purchased cats from a local animal shelter for $15 each and used them in cruel and deadly medical training exercises. Even though sophisticated simulators were available, animals used in the exercises had tubes forced down their throats and needles stabbed into their chests. Is this truly the way to operate?
I can honestly say that i do not think this is right. Poor, innocent animals are being volunteered to be killed, and experience immense amounts of pain; for no reason at all. They are here, just like we are; trying to live and be happy. When one day someone comes along and brings them to a laboratory and is shoving tubes down its throat. We could change this. If you live in a state that mandates pound seizure, learn as much as possible about the subject. Talk to the managers of local animal shelters and pounds to see what they have done or are doing. Find out whether any town or state officials are interested in the issue and whether any are working to repeal pound-seizure laws, either locally or nationally. Start a petition campaign, find opportunities to talk about or debate the issue in public as well as in private, and organize a letter-writing campaign. You could change this. You could help save millions of animals today; it's your choice.
